“Identifying, Celebrating and Learning from New Zealand’s Best Dairy Businesses”
The objective of the Dairy Business of the Year is to identify the best farmers in the industry so we can all learn from their success as well as to give every entrant an independent assessment of where their business sits. Until recently this almost entirely focused on identifying the most profitable farms based on Return on Capital. Profitability is still vital to a healthy industry so the primary focus of the competition will continue to be based on profit. However the business not only needs to be profitable but has to be sustainable to enable it to continue to be able to deliver profit year on year. This is the sixth year of the competition and Intelact with the support of DairyNZ, AmbreedCRV, Vitec, Elanco, Merial, Red Sky, Agricom and the Dairyman have decided to have a more rounded look at the entrant’s business by introducing two new indices.
To be sustainable in today’s world the dairy farmer has to meet ever more expectations from the rest of the community. One of these expectations is around employment on farm. Today’s young people have different expectations and needs and much of this is reflected in law. People are vital to the well being of dairying and we need to have skilled people in the industry to both work on our farms and to be able to buy the farm in the future. In recognition of this entrants will have their people management assessed by a simple HR score which will enable them to judge their people management skills.
Sustainable dairying also needs to address the issue of the environmental footprint. So again entrants will answer a few simple questions to assess the footprint of their business.
Despite this Profitability is the key to successful dairying so the judging will be weighted 70% on profit, 15% on people management and 15% on environmental management.
While it is great to have the honour of winning a competition like this, as we say to our kids the most important thing is to participate. All participants will receive an objective financial business analysis, HR and environmental score card which bench marks the business with other farmers identifying the strengths of business as well as where the opportunities are for improvement.
